Cos'è
Il 4 maggio Gambara celebra il giorno di San Gottardo, una delle tradizioni più antiche e sentite della Bassa Bresciana. Famiglie e amici si riuniscono nei campi adiacenti all’omonima chiesa con tende, camper, trattori e roulotte, imbastiscono tavolate di cibo, si chiacchiera, si canta e si gioca a briscola.
Che ci sia sole, pioggia o vento, ai gambaresi poco importa: niente, neppure il meteo, sembra in grado di rovinare questa attesissima giornata di festa e di convivialità. Per questo, nel 2015, la giunta comunale fece di San Gottardo un giorno festivo a tutti gli effetti per lavoratori e studenti.
La storia
Negli anni ‘50 si arrivava a San Gottardo a bordo di carri coperti di frasche trainati da cavalli. Anche allora come oggi, si apparecchiava un enorme pic-nic con salame, salamine, bisolà e torte salate, uova, formaggi, grigliate e tanto vino.
Negli anni ‘70 fu ricostruita la chiesetta omonima, dove si celebravano le funzioni religiose.
Chi era San Gottardo?
Gottardo fu vescovo di Hildesheim in Germania e visse tra il 960 e il 1038. Personalità molto apprezzata e amata da tutti, fondò varie scuole, fece costruire monumenti, chiese e un ospizio per i poveri.
Papa Innocenzo II lo canonizzò nel 1131. Le sue spoglie si trovano tutt’oggi nella cattedrale di Hildesheim.
A lui è stato dedicato uno dei valichi più importanti dell’arco alpino: il passo del San Gottardo, che delimita il confine tra il Canton Ticino e il Canton Uri in Svizzera.
Patron Saint holiday of St. Gottardo
On May 4, Gambara celebrates the day of St. Gottardo, one of the oldest and most heartfelt traditions of the Bassa Bresciana. Families and friends gather in the fields adjacent to the church of the same name with tents, campers, tractors, and caravans, set up tables of food, chat, sing, and play briscola (a fun card game).
Whether it is sunny, rainy, or windy, the people of Gambara care very little: nothing, not even the weather, seems to be able to spoil this eagerly awaited day of celebration and conviviality. That is why, in 2015, the municipal council made the day of St. Gottardo a public holiday in its own right for both workers and students.
History
In the 1950s, people arrived at San Gottardo in horse-drawn wagons covered with branches. Then, as now, a huge picnic was prepared with salami, sausages, bisolà (a typical cake made from bread dough, the biga) and savory pies, eggs, cheese, grilled meats, and lots of wine.
In the 1970s, the little homonymous church was rebuilt, where religious services were held.
Who was St. Gottardo?
Gottardo (Godehard or Gotthard in German) was bishop of Hildesheim in Germany and lived between 960 and 1038. A much appreciated and beloved personality, he founded various schools, built monuments, churches and a hospice for the poor.
Pope Innocent II canonized him in 1131. His remains are kept in the Hildesheim Cathedral to this day.
An important Alpine pass has been dedicated to him: the Gotthard Pass, which marks the border between the cantons of Ticino and Uri in Switzerland.
